Our Mission and Values

Promoting wellness through horses.

Our Mission

HMS Learning Through Equine, in partnership with the Roots to Wellness Collaboratory at the University of Regina and the Nanatawihowikamik Healing Lodge and Wellness Clinic provides culturally guided counselling and horse-based healing workshops for individuals and their families. These programs support cultural reclamation, family reunification, holistic wellness, and Indigenous advocacy through trauma-informed land and animal based practices.

HMS is an Indigenous owned and operated business that offers therapeutic and educational services rooted in the First Nations and Metis knowledge systems. Located on Treaty 4 and Treaty 2 territory, the organization supports status, non-status, Metis and First Nations individuals through healing practices that re-connect people to the land, animals and cultural identity.

Our Vision

What sets our program apart from others.

Our services include family support programs, healing and talking circles, group therapy, and individualized mental health support. Each group will bring different experiences and needs and our trauma-informed team, including Elder Angie McArthur-Delorme, counsellor Cindy McArthur, and Equine Specialist Brittany Hodgson, will be present throughout to support individualized and collective healing. The sessions are relational, flexible, and rooted in Indigenous ways of knowing which will allow participants to feel seen, safe and heard.

The program integrates equine assisted therapy, land-based healing, kayaking (a water-based reflection activity) and walk-and-talk counselling in natural outdoor environments with access to indoor facilities as needed.

Horses offer a robust, non-judgemental connection that supports emotional regulation, boundary-setting, and rebuilding trust. For survivors who have experienced abuse, trauma, or disconnection from family and culture, the horse-human bond becomes a pathway to self discovery, confidence, and restoration. Unlike traditional western therapeutic models, this environmental is non-clinical and decolonized, free from stigma and institutional barriers.
