FAQ

A horse’s intuition has the ability to feel student’s energy and heartbeat while also mirroring non-verbal cues which allow them to help students with a variety of issues including mental, emotional and physical. Horses can aid in building and restoring healthy boundaries for those students who have experienced abuse, trauma, neglect and low-self esteem. They can assist students that need help with regulation, attention/concentration, impulse control, self-image and aggression/risk taking.

Sessions are student centered and include horse-cared activities. While the students interact with the horse, they explore thoughts, feelings, sensations, and memories. The environment offers an opportunity for the students to be grounded and in an unthreatening environment. With the protection of the horses non-judgemental and unbiased perspective, students can freely communicate and explore their own self-perceptions and behaviour in relation to the horse. During the session, endorphins are released, which help to calm an overactive nervous system.

Horse-based Healing can create a comfortable environment for our students outside of the colonial view of counselling, therapy, or intervention. It eliminates the 4 walls and breaks down barriers in a non-threatening or judgemental way that may limit their progress or participation.

When they aren’t working with clients, our herd enjoys plenty of time turned out together on open pasture where they can relax, graze, and simply be horses. We ensure that they feel safe, valued, and loved just as they help our clients feel during their time in the program.

We collaborate with Indigenous communities and have an elder on our team to incorporate traditional knowledge and practices into our equine-assisted education. She leads each session with a prayer and smudge to encourage the session to go in a positive way. We are also proud to note that we have an all Indigenous team.
